Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The USI Public Safety department is seeking a full-time Public Safety Officer position to provide primary coverage for the public safety – security function for University buildings, property, and grounds and to assist students, employees, and visitors as needed.

Responsibilities may include but not limited to:
• Provide a 24/7 presence on the campus, student housing and other university property.
• Enforce university rules and regulations, local, state and federal laws.
• Patrol campus on foot, bicycle, or in university vehicles.
• Investigate and report potential hazardous, unlawful activity, unusual or suspicious conditions or activities.
• Make routine and non-routine security checks of buildings and grounds.
• Unlock and lock doors utilizing manual and electronic locking mechanisms, and according to schedules and instructions.
• Monitor radio and other communication devices and respond to calls for service including but not limited to distress, domestic disputes, and complaints of alleged unruly activity.
• Take statements from victims and witnesses.
• Respond to and investigate fire, search and rescue, security, emergency and building alarms; clears traffic and provide support to emergency personnel.
• Provide emergency medical response until relieved by equal or higher qualified emergency responders.
• Respond to and reports traffic accidents.
• Prepare and write reports for investigations of accidents, fire alarms, property damage, thefts, disorderly conduct, animal complaints including their capture, and incidents, as required.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
• High School diploma/GED and two years security, public safety, law enforcement, or military experience or equivalent education required. Two years of college coursework may be considered in lieu of the two year experience requirement.
• Ability to learn security enforcement methods and techniques.
• Ability to enforce university rules, regulations, and enforce laws firmly, tactfully and consistently.
• Ability to ascertain facts through personal contact, observation, and the examination of records.
• Ability to use communication as means of crisis de-escalation, tactical communication, and crisis intervention tactics.
• Ability to physical defend one-self and others.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

The successful candidate must complete university provided training and thereafter maintain in the following areas:
• Health care provider CPR, AED, Standard first Aid
• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) / First Responder
• National Academies of Emergency Dispatch – Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD); (In order to obtain certifications, must pass the third-party provider’s criminal background check and physical examination which includes a drug screening, and must have current immunization records, TB test and hepatitis B vaccine.)
• National Incident Management System (NIMS)
• Complete FEMA Courses
• Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
• Hazardous Materials for 1st Responders
• Technical Rescue Awareness for 1st Responders
INCLEA Campus Protection Officer Course (CPO)
• Hazmat Awareness
• Critical Incident Training (CIT)
• Other certifications/ recertification or specializations as assigned or required.

MS4/$13.25/hr (Post introductory period $13.52/hr.) plus $0.25/hr shift premium for working 2nd or 3rd shift
