Job Description Summary

The advisor or counselor in Student Financial Assistance is responsible for independent student advisement and finalization of annual awards of grants, loans, and scholarships. This position provides program support in multiple federal/state aid programs and ensures compliance with federal regulations, state law, and institutional policies; communicates with campus offices and departments; and provides assistance or oversight of Federal/State aid programs. The advisor or counselor assists in the development of special programs, suggests enhancements and changes to policy and procedures, and may serve on departmental and professional committees. The advisor or counselor may also participate in high school and campus presentations and serve as panelist/moderator in professional workshops and conferences.

Qualified candidates must have:
• A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or related field.
• Minimum of five years professional office experience required. Experience must demonstrate the ability to apply legal, technical, or other similar bodies of knowledge. For Counselor level position, one to two years of experience in student financial assistance or higher education required.
• Working knowledge of federal tax rules applicable to student financial aid processing preferred. For Counselor level position, comprehensive knowledge of federal tax rules and working knowledge of state tax rules applicable to student financial aid processing required.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong listening and interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy for effective communication with students and parents on sensitive financial matters.
• Demonstrated aptitude for numeric/data analysis and identification of inconsistencies.
• Ability to independently research federal/state policies and make appropriate changes in office procedures.
• Strong organizational skills, effective problem solving, and high detail accuracy.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and with microcomputers and the Internet.
